Plans for new green jobs step up a level

The Green Jobs Delivery Group will support the creation of up to 480,000 skilled green industry jobs by 2030, driven by new government policies introduced within the Energy Security and Net Zero strategies. 

The Green Jobs Delivery Group recently had its first meeting to support the UK with its green industry plans. Greg Hands, the Minister of State for Business, Energy and Clean Growth, managed the first meeting and highlighted their commitment to creating green job opportunities in the UK. 

A green industry future represents a vital part of the UK Government’s plan for expanding the economy and generating high-skilled and well-paid jobs nationwide. The group intends to support the UK by creating a skilled workforce capable of building a clean energy sector in core industrial areas and shifting towards more affordable renewable energy to combat the rising oil and gas prices. It will also ensure that employees, businesses and local regions receive the support needed to make the transition and eliminate the UK’s contribution to climate change by 2050.

The Green Jobs Delivery Group, co-chaired by Michael Lewis, the CEO of E.ON, consists of several representatives from leading businesses, industries, trade unions and academic institutions. The plans to drive a green industrial revolution could generate up to £100 billion of private investment by 2030, at which point, over 90% of electricity in the UK could be low carbon. These figures mean the nation will require many skilled workers to develop new technologies like electric vehicles, heat pumps, hydrogen boilers, wind turbines and solar panels.

Approximately 68,000 green industry jobs have already been created across the UK or are in the pipeline after the UK Government’s ten-point plan announcement. This plan includes the development of electric vehicle manufacturing in Sunderland, hydrogen sites in Teesside and offshore wind facilities in Northumberland, Yorkshire and the Humber. The Delivery Group will continue ensuring all sectors and regions benefit from the green transition.

Greg Hands, the chair of the delivery group, explains that we require thousands of skilled workers for this clean transition and to improve energy security, generate well-paid green industry jobs and improve the cost of living. Hands highlight the necessity to spread opportunities by ensuring levelling up across all regions of the UK. The nation’s most valuable asset is its workforce. The new Delivery Group will support employers with the knowledge and employees with the skills to support the transition and become green economy leaders.

Co-Chair of the group Michael Lewis explains that our economy is on an important journey towards becoming more environmentally friendly than ever. The green transition will impact every industry, and we need to ensure that green jobs are available to everyone. The UK must create a future talent pipeline to support the path toward net-zero. The Delivery Group will provide industry and the UK Government collaboration to create a diverse, skilled and resilient workforce.

Over the last 30 years, the UK has recorded significant clean energy growth, with emissions decreasing by over 40%, while the economy has increased by nearly 80%. There are over 430,000 jobs in low-carbon businesses and their associated supply chains. The British Energy Security Strategy includes measures to accelerate the transition to renewables, providing an additional 40,000 green industry jobs. The steps include an increased focus on nuclear and flexible small-scale reactors. An increase in offshore wind capacity to 50GW by 2030 and 14GW of solar were recommended. 

The strategy also included doubling low carbon hydrogen production capacity to 10GW by 2030. Ben Fletcher, the COO of Make UK, believes that manufacturers are leading the way in the green revolution and ensuring they can deliver the skills required to make the transition a success. Fletcher highlights how they are pleased to be a part of the group, which collectively supports the rising demand for green skills for now and for the future.

The Delivery Group follows a recent recommendation by the Green Jobs Taskforce, suggesting that every job can be green and meets a specific commitment within the Government Net Zero Strategy. The UK Government has already launched several initiatives and projects to establish low carbon industries nationwide. These include supporting employers with establishing green apprenticeships, offering free adult skills training, and delivering green skills boot camps and specialist training courses.
