Businesses encouraged to highlight green jobs to younger generation prior to COP26

Before COP26 began, businesses and leaders across Scotland were being encouraged to collaborate on a new initiative to highlight the range of emerging green opportunities across all industries to the younger generation.

Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Glasgow, in partnership with the Chamber of Commerce, created a new project supporting the future of the younger generation in Scotland with a circular economy. The initiative named “My Climate Path” provides several opportunities for businesses to display decisive action towards climate action, sharing knowledge and experience with young people. The Scottish Government-funded project was launched in partnership with DYW Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire and DYW West. It focuses on developing sustainable development within a circular and net-zero economy, highlighting the long term benefits that COP26 can deliver.

The project supports the Young Person’s Guarantee commitment, providing 16-24-year-olds in Scotland with an opportunity to benefit their future. 

My Climate Path consists of several initiatives, enabling businesses, big or small, the chance to promote their sustainable measures while supporting the larger goals of COP26 for Glasgow. Projects include Climate Heroes who pair industry partners with schools to display genuine circular and green case studies. These projects include community work experience, youth climate council and sustainable fashion events. Students are actively encouraged to develop a circular product, plant their forests and learn about construction and design by creating a net-zero McDonalds. So far, the projects have received considerable support. 

Mairi McAllan, the minister for environment and land reform, explains that young people have been pivotal in driving climate action. The future generations are dependent on taking decisive global action. Tackling the climate and nature challenge is critical worldwide but also presents many opportunities across all industries. My Climate Path supports young people to develop the necessary skills needed for green and circular jobs. It enables them to liaise with employers and explore potential sustainable roles of the future.

Susan Aitken, leading councillor of Glasgow City Council, stated that My Climate Path delivers a critical educational legacy from COP26 for Glasgow and the younger generation. The project will follow on from the ambition and discussions of COP26 and harness this energy to prepare young people through education on entering the green industry and how green jobs are essential for meeting climate targets.

Alison McRae, senior director at the Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, believes My Climate Path provides businesses and communities with the opportunity and resources to connect with the future workforce and equip them with the necessary skills to embrace green and circular jobs. McRae believes this is just the beginning in influencing the future on entering careers that specifically tackle the climate emergency.
