Acción Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Program, S4S Technologies, and Boomitra were announced as this year’s winners of the Earthshot Prize, receiving a £1 million award to support their plans to accelerate their climate and environmental solutions.

The work of the third Earthshot Prize Winners spans worldwide, protecting and restoring the environment and supporting communities covering six continents.

The awards ceremony highlighted the inspiring stories of all finalists. After a comprehensive selection process exploring the most inspirational, impactful and inclusive projects five winners were announced.

Accion Andina, The Andes Mountains

Acción Andina is a grassroots, community-based project operating in South America, protecting native forest ecosystems and the associated benefits to nature and millions of people within the region. Florent Kaiser, CEO of Global Forest Generation, explains that in just a few years, GFG has expanded Acción Andina into one of the largest ecosystem restoration projects in South America. Kaiser believes the Earthshot Prize solidifies their commitment to delivering climate change resiliency to communities most affected by the loss of ecosystems. The organisation intends to scale Acción Andina and replicate its community-focused model worldwide, prioritising areas with critically endangered and neglected ecosystems and vulnerable groups critical to climate change resilience.

GRST, Hong Kong

Focusing on an innovative method to build and recycle critical lithium-ion batteries. GRST’s solution provides an option to enhance the development of clean electric vehicles for the future.

Wildaid Marine Program, Worldwide

Wildaid is a global non-profit organisation focused on scaling marine enforcement to eliminate illegal fishing and enhance ocean conservation. Frank Harley, chief strategy officer of GRST, highlighted how honoured they were to be part of the Earthshot awards. Harley explains that our world requires a significant amount of batteries to reach net zero by 2050, but a transformation is needed to make batteries clean and recyclable. The business’s water-based technology supports this change, providing customers with sustainable energy for the future.

Meghan Brosnan, COO of Wildaid, explains that their main program promises to fill a critical gap for marine protected areas and sustainable fisheries by focusing on law enforcement capacity. According to Brosnan, the award exemplifies their hard work with their local partners to ensure our oceans are healthy and vibrant for the future. Securing the prize is a milestone in their path to scaling global marine areas from 96 to 250 by 2028 and creating resilient enforcement with their partners, enabling fisheries, marine wildlife and coastal communities to thrive.

S4S Technologies, India

S4S Technologies designs solar-powered dryers and processing equipment, combating food waste and enabling small-hold farmers to preserve crops and convert their potential excess waste into valuable products.

Nidhi Pant, co-founder of S4S Technologies, explains that the organisation, with female farmers, are delivering a new food ecosystem, reducing waste and mitigating the rise in emissions while meeting global food requirements. By empowering women farmers to take a leading role in tackling climate change through food security, higher incomes and working with the government, women farmers are critical partners in delivering long-term impact. Pant highlights their mission is delivering a waste-free food system and transforming the lives of millions of women farmers.

Boomitra, South America, Asia and Africa

Boomitra is eradicating emissions and strengthening farmer profits by implementing incentives for land restoration via a verified carbon credit marketplace. Aadith Moorthy, founder and CEO of Boomitra, explains that the prize represents a recognition of their efforts and dedication to all their partners, their team and the farmers they work with, who work daily to strengthen climate action.

Prince William, founder and president of the Earthshot Prize, explained that the last year has represented a great challenge, a year where climate impacts have become too visible to be ignored. While it has been a tough year for many, Prince William emphasises that the awards show that hope does remain. The optimism is evident, with the finalists and winners of the Earthshot prize reminding us that no matter where you are on the planet, the spirit of innovation and the ability to inspire change is everywhere.

Starting in December 2022, Earthshot Prize began a global search to find the most inspiring and innovative solutions to the greatest environmental challenges. The five winners were selected by Prince William and the Earthshot Prize Council. Led by Christiana Figueres, chair of the Earth Shot Prize board of trustees and representative of the Paris Agreement, the Prize Council is a global group of activists, experts and influencers dedicated to delivering critical and innovative action to protect our natural environment.

The Earthshot Prize is now focusing on 2024, and nominations for the next group of innovations and entrepreneurs are open and will close on the 15th of December.
