Renewables jobs leading the rise in UK markets

New data suggests the number of jobs created in the renewable energy market is growing four times faster than the overall UK employment industry.

According to a study by leading consultancy PwC, the number of green jobs posted nearly trebled during 2022, reaching an approximate figure of 336,000 green opportunities. The study also suggests that over a third of these jobs were in London and the South-Eastern region, especially looking at scientific and other professional roles. The report highlighted that Scotland has the highest number of green jobs, supported by a dominant onshore and offshore wind market.

In England, London recorded the highest increase in green jobs as a proportion of its job market. PwC claimed that London and the South-East were accelerating far quicker than other regions in terms of green industry jobs. Continued progress in solar and tidal power in Wales resulted in a 150% increase in green jobs posted, with rising demand for green opportunities in manufacturing, construction and professional services.

In every region across the UK, green jobs represented a higher share of the job market than in previous years, and the number of green opportunities had doubled in most areas. Carl Sizer, PwC head of regions for the UK, explained that while Wales and Scotland were the top performers, it was interesting that around 1 in 5 new green opportunities was in London. Sizer believes if growth continues at this rate, London will become a dominant hub over other cities and regions in terms of green job creation. If we want to achieve our net zero goals while continuing to grow, the green economy needs to happen nationwide.

The UK Government has faced criticism regarding not moving quickly enough on green energy and supporting additional job development in the industry. Energy and Climate Minister, Graham Stuart, explains that the report clearly shows how investment in new renewable energy projects and climate change is delivering growth and new job opportunities nationwide.

New green jobs are part of a progressive industry which will be vital for our future net zero economies, but we must ensure all regions receive the benefits. Ed Milliband, the shadow climate change secretary, explains that the report provides further evidence that while there are positive days ahead, we must take the opportunities, jobs and prosperity from a green transition. The report findings show that we must ensure good green jobs are distributed more evenly across the country.

A green skills future

Meeting our climate and sustainability challenges requires more than just environmental and sustainability managers. It needs a range of people across all industries who can think about green issues, sustainability and climate change in their daily decisions. Employers are actively looking for these particular skills, the attributes that current and future employees need to fulfil the accelerated rise in new green industry jobs.

The rate of green and sustainability jobs has grown considerably over the last decade, but there are concerns over the number of skilled professionals.

According to LinkedIn, the number of green jobs increased worldwide by 8% annually over the last five years, while the number of people highlighting green skills in their profiles grew by 6%. Green skills and sustainability training will be critical to fill the increasing number of job opportunities inside businesses. More training will be necessary at educational institutions, professional companies and employers to close the green skills gap.

Achieving a transition to net zero and meeting our climate targets will be more achievable as people become more capable and commit their working days to green and sustainable solutions.
