The Earthshot Prize – a decade of action to repair our Earth

Prince William and Sir David Attenborough have joined forces and announced the launch of one of the most prestigious global environmental awards in history. Prince William believes the world is at a tipping point and explains that the Earthshot prize is his and Sir David Attenborough’s effort to ensure we can pass our planet onto the next generation in a better state than we found it. William says his inspiration has come from his father Prince Charles, along with leading naturalist Sir David Attenborough, who will be on the judging panel for the prizes.

After two years of efforts, Prince William and The Royal Foundation of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge created a project focusing on the protection and restoration of the environment. Aside from supporting evidence-based solutions to some of the most critical environmental challenges, the Earthshot Prize intends to convert the existing feelings towards environmental issues into a heightened level of optimism in which we have the ability and ingenuity to make a change, inspire and generate collective action.

Leading naturalist Sir David Attenborough has shown his support towards Earthshot, referring to it as “a global prize designed to motivate and inspire a new generation of thinkers, leaders and dreamers to think differently”. Sir David Attenborough explained the magnitude of the situation in a recent interview with BBC radio stating that we are fast approaching many irreversible dangers, and it’s clear that the environment has become a matter of great urgency.

Earthshot was inspired by President J F Kennedy’s Moonshot, which united millions of people towards a goal of putting a man on the moon and being a driving force for the development of new technology in the 1960s. The Earthshot Prize focuses on five specific ‘Earthshots’, clear and bold targets for our planet, that if achieved by 2030, will dramatically improve lives for us and future generations. Each factor represents scientifically proven targets, including UN Sustainable Development Goals and other established measures aimed at repairing our planet.

The goals intend to generate a new way of thinking, support new technology innovation, policies and solutions. By embracing these five issues, the Earthshot prize displays the relationship between environmental challenges how critical it is that we tackle them collectively.

The five earthshots include:

-protect and restore our nature

-clean our air

-revive our oceans

-build a waste-free world

-fix our climate

The Earth is at a tipping point and we face a stark choice: either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet, or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve. People can achieve great things. The next ten years present us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of action to repair the Earth.” explains Prince William.

A total of five, one million-pound prizes will be provided every year for the next ten years, generating 50 solutions to some of the biggest environmental problems our world faces. Each year, an awards ceremony will take place in various locations between 2021 and 2030. What is evident is that the Earthshot Prize goes beyond awards and achievement. It is about a decisive decade of action, to support the environment world, ensure new solutions are scaled and inspire people worldwide to work together in protecting and repairing our planet.

The Earthshot Prize is a partner of the Global Alliance, an established network of organisations with a shared ambition of driving, changing and supporting the repairing of our planet over the coming decade. Partners of the Global Alliance are all non-profit organisations dedicated to environmental and sustainable development. The group creates added expertise and a global network for environmental action.

Over the coming years, the Earthshot Prize will discover and highlight some of the most innovative and inspiring solutions to some of the most critical environmental challenges our world is facing. The next few years ahead is a critical period where we need to collaborate, work together and take action to support our planet for the future.
